This guide gives you a realistic starting point for a Budapest visit in 2026. Prices are approximate where restaurants and cafés set their own rates. Getting Around Budapest: 2026 Transit Costs

Budapest has an extensive public transport network operated by BKK. It includes four metro lines, trams, buses, trolleybuses and suburban trains. The metro and tram system is usually the fastest way around the central districts, while trams 2, 4 and 6 are particularly useful for visitors.

How much do BKK tickets cost in 2026?

The following are the standard 2026 BKK prices listed on the official BKK ticket and pass prices page. Check that page shortly before your visit because prices and conditions can change.

Single ticket: 500 HUF, approximately €1.25 or US$1.35. It is valid for one uninterrupted journey, with some restrictions on changing vehicles.
Ten single tickets: 4,500 HUF, approximately €11.25 or US$12.15.
30-minute time-based ticket: 600 HUF, approximately €1.50 or US$1.62.
90-minute time-based ticket: 850 HUF, approximately €2.10 or US$2.30.

The airport bus 100E is a separate service and requires a special airport ticket. Do not assume that an ordinary single ticket or travelcard covers it. Bus 200E, which connects the airport with the metro network, uses the regular BKK fare system, but it takes longer and requires a transfer.

Which ticket is best for a short visit?

If you are staying in central Budapest and enjoy walking, single tickets may be enough. Three or four journeys in one day can make a 24-hour travelcard better value. The 72-hour travelcard is convenient for a long weekend, especially if your accommodation is outside the centre or you plan to use public transport several times daily.

Buy tickets from BKK machines, customer service centres or the official BudapestGO app. If you use a paper ticket, validate it before boarding or entering the metro area. Inspectors do check tickets, and an unvalidated ticket can lead to an unpleasant fine. Keep the ticket until you leave the vehicle or station.

Do not buy a travelcard simply because it sounds convenient. Budapest’s centre is compact, and many major sights are within walking distance of one another. A sensible plan often combines walking with a few tram or metro rides. Avoid unlicensed taxis and never accept a ride from someone approaching you inside a railway station or airport.

Everyday Cost of Living Benchmark: 2026 Prices

Budapest is less expensive than many Western European capitals, but central tourist areas are no longer cheap by local standards. The prices below are useful 2026 benchmarks, not fixed national tariffs. Restaurant portions, location and exchange rates make a noticeable difference.

McDonald’s Big Mac in Budapest: approximately 2,200–2,500 HUF, or €5.50–€6.25. An Extra Value Meal is usually around 3,200–3,800 HUF, or €8–€9.50.

Menus displayed outside restaurants should show prices clearly. Check whether service is included before paying. A low-looking menu price may not include a service charge, which is commonly added separately.

What currency should you use in Budapest?

Hungary uses the Hungarian forint, written as HUF or Ft. Some hotels and tourist businesses display euro prices, but paying in euros usually gives you a poor exchange rate.

Cards are accepted in most hotels, supermarkets, restaurants, cafés, museums and public transport ticket machines. Contactless payment is common. You still need some cash for small bakeries, market stalls, public toilets and occasional smaller cafés. Use an ATM operated by a recognised bank, and decline dynamic currency conversion when the machine or card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency.

Tipping is not compulsory, but around 10% is normal when service is good and no service charge has been included. Check the receipt carefully. Some restaurants add a 10–15% service charge automatically. You do not need to tip at a fast-food restaurant or self-service café.

Which sights and activities are worth your time?

Visit Heroes’ Square and walk through City Park.
Climb Gellért Hill if the paths are open and you are comfortable with a steep walk.
Walk around Buda Castle, the Castle District and the area near Matthias Church without entering every paid attraction.
Use the city’s ordinary trams for sightseeing, especially along the Danube, instead of paying for a dedicated tour vehicle.
Visit the Central Market Hall to look around and compare food prices, although the most central stalls can be tourist-priced.
