Somebody in the NFL scheduling office has a sense of humor, or a grudge. The Patriots open the 2026 season on Wednesday night, September 9th, at Lumen Field, against the exact team that hung 29 points on them and walked off with the Lombardi Trophy five months earlier.

This is only the third time a Super Bowl rematch has landed in Week 1, and the first since 2016. It happened in February, it’s on tape, and the Patriots have had exactly one offseason to do something about it.

That’s not a knock so much as a scouting note: Philadelphia had him running precise option routes in a scheme that valued ball security over broken tackles. New England is betting a totally different context unlocks the version of Brown who terrorizes safeties for fun. Maybe it does. Maybe he’s just a very good receiver who now has to prove it in a new building against a defense that just embarrassed his new quarterback.

Either way, Drake Maye finally has his weapon, and Brown has already been talking him up in public. “He’s a true leader. He leads the room,” Brown said of Maye on the “Forged in Foxborough” podcast back in June. “For him to have it so young and recognize what he has in front of him, it speaks volumes.” Maye returned the compliment at camp: “A.J.’s been awesome. I’m looking forward to playing with him, looking forward to getting into camp and building some chemistry. I know there’s already some there for me. You’ve just got to throw it near him, and he’ll make a play.” That’s a quote that means nothing in July and everything in September if Brown is actually open against Seattle’s coverage.

Romeo Doubs came over too, giving Maye a second real target instead of a collection of camp bodies. The receiver room went from a punchline to an actual problem for opposing coordinators. Whether that translates against a defense that just eliminated them is the entire season opener in one sentence.

Patriots’ Defensive Investments Must Match Seattle’s Scheme

New England didn’t just fix the offense and hope the defense figured itself out. Dre’Mont Jones signed a three-year, $39.5 million deal, with $23.1 million guaranteed, to anchor the interior; Kevin Byard and Alijah Vera-Tucker came in too, adding real depth at spots that got exposed in February. Patriots’ defensive question marks heading into training camp haven’t fully disappeared, but the front office at least addressed the obvious holes instead of pretending the Super Bowl loss was a fluke.

Six sacks don’t happen by accident. If Jones and company can’t get pressure without blitzing everybody, Maye is running for his life against the exact same defense that turned him into a punching bag five months ago. That’s the whole ballgame on that side of the ball.

Seattle’s Championship Roster Survived Offseason Shakeup—Mostly

The Seahawks didn’t get through the offseason clean, and Patriots fans looking for a reason to believe should start here. Kenneth Walker III, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, signed with Kansas City. Coby Bryant, Boye Mafe, and Riq Woolen are all gone from the defense, and offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak left too. That’s a real hit, not a rounding error.

But 95 percent snap continuity is 95 percent snap continuity. Losing your Super Bowl MVP running back stings, and losing three defensive contributors stings more, but Macdonald’s scheme was never about any single name. It was about the whole unit playing fast and disciplined together, and that group is almost entirely intact. The numbers back it up: 8-2 at home during the 2025 postseason stretch, outscoring opponents by 12.2 points per game. Lumen Field in primetime against a team it just dismantled is about as favorable a Week 1 setup as a defending champion gets.

Patriots fans pointing at the defensive losses as an opening aren’t wrong to notice them. They’re wrong if they think it’s enough on its own. Macdonald’s system chewed up a Patriots offense with far less firepower than the one showing up in September. The continuity argument cuts both ways, and it currently cuts toward Seattle.

The $9.6 Billion Ownership Question Hanging Over Lumen Field

None of the football matters as much, at least this week, as the number sitting over the entire franchise: $9.612 billion. That’s what the Khosla family agreed to pay for the Seahawks, a record price for an NFL team and a jump of $3.562 billion over the previous high of $6.05 billion set back in 2023. It still needs a vote from NFL owners on August 26th in Atlanta, so nothing is finalized, but the direction is set.

Neeru Khosla is set to become the controlling owner, with her son Neal Khosla expected to take on a significant leadership role once the sale clears. Vinod Khosla, the tech investor whose name will draw most of the headlines, put out the statement you’d expect: “We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks. We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere.” Proceeds from the sale go largely to charity per the terms of Paul Allen’s estate, so this isn’t a cash-out story in the way most ownership changes are.

What it is: a pending, uncertain transition happening in real time during the exact window a team is supposed to be locked in on defending a title. Nobody in Seattle is walking around distracted by ownership politics in August. But a $9.6 billion sale, a vote that hasn’t happened yet, and a new controlling family waiting in the wings is a subplot that follows a team into a season whether the locker room acknowledges it or not.

Tech circles view the Khosla connection as a bullish signal for how the organization gets run going forward. Fans just want to know the people who won a championship six months ago are still the ones calling the shots on gameday, and for now, they are.
