After pruning some of my native elms, the second flush has produced new extensions with no leaves in the first few "nodes." How should these be handled? Cut back to old leaves or will these produce buds?

The other day i was offered several free Wisteria to collect. Bit early here (autumn in Australia) but i wasnt going to say no and they had to come out then and there.
