A change.org petition is rapidly garnering signatures to preserve a unique bisexual landmark in Cardiff.

Ianto’s Shrine is a community built collective memory of the impact of Torchwood character Ianto Jones. Ianto was one of the many bisexuals in the show but cut through to many viewers in his expression of his bisexuality and how he tried to explain how he came to realise his bisexuality in coming out to his family.

Torchwood aired from 22 October 2006 to 9 September 2011 before vanishing from our screens after a link-up with BBC America failed to boost ratings across the pond. But as one of few TV programmes in that era to have bisexual characters – let alone to have most of the core characters be bisexual – it broke important new ground in bi representation.

The impact Ianto’s character had on viewers led to the shrine being created following the death of the character in season three of the programme. It’s close to the fictional HQ of Torchwood in Cardiff, and is made up of an ever-shifting set of tributes and artwork. It is just yards from the Millennium Centre (pictured above) and the Senedd, the heart of Welsh government.

The petitioners explain: “Sadly due to structural decay and wood rot – Ianto’s shrine is under consideration by management of the mermaid quay to be removed .

“As many of you know this is a memorial for our beloved fictional character Ianto jones who fell to the 456 . This shrine has had many visitors throughout the years and has had a variety of items on the shrine – from drawings to photos and even the occasional tie .

“This shrine has become a landmark for both Torchwood and Doctor who fans . If they are considering removal , perhaps Torchwood fans could come together to come up with a solution to save the shrine . Whether that’s relocation or restoring the shrine.”
