Each year we publish a roundup of bi events at the end of December. This was another year of war, recession, continued inflation and continued social and legislative attacks on LGBT people – may we all have a very different and better year to come!

It was the year Katy Perry was projectiled into space (and came back to date the former Canadian Prime Minister) and Oscar Wilde was finally allowed back in the library.

Half a decade on from COVID-19 the world is still different – not just because of the pandemic, but also the lingering effects of Brexit, the 2008 crash, and the Ukraine war all making the UK in particular poorer. The increasing wealth inequality and power of social media algorithms have helped hatred and scapegoating spiral society to be more polarised – and LGBT people are among the groups being hit hardest in a carefully created backlash against progress. If it has felt like a tough year, you’re not the only one.

2025 was five years since same-sex marriage became legal in Northern Ireland, and ten years since Stormont voted to allow it – for the intervening years the DUP used their veto power to delay the change. It was also 20 years since the first Civil Partnerships were registered in the UK, and a quarter of a century since the age of consent was equalised by order of the European Court under the UK’s last Labour government.

So what happened month by month?

January

Lichtenstein kicked the year off by legalising same-sex marriage – that’s now legal in 38 countries. An employment tribunal shows biphobia in the workplace can have consequences. G-A-Y bar in London went up for sale, though sadly no-one turned it into B-I-BAR. New figures from the Office for National Statistics showed the proportion of people in the UK identifying as bi had doubled in five years.

America got a second term of Trump

But then the second Trump presidency began, turning the American clock back to the 1950s: we wondered if same-sex marriage in America would last the full four years, which at the time may have seemed like doom mongering but by the end of 2025 the US Supreme Court was seriously contemplating the question.

February

In America swathes of bi and other LGBT research finding started being deleted from government websites as part of the war on facts and LGBT organisations tried to counter-sue. And a city councillor was forced out of office for having an OnlyFans account. Over here, the government planned benefit cuts that would especially hit bis, and we noted a campaign to memorialise the last two people to be hanged for being bisexual. On TV, Bear Grylls started hunting bisexuals.

March

It was Bi Health Month, with the theme “Navigating Bi+ Health in an Uncertain World” so very relevant as LGBT inclusion work was rolled back both sides of the Atlantic, far moreso in the US. Trinidad and Tobago decided to recriminalise homosexuality, and bisexuality by implication. Headlines claimed the Scottish government was employing too many LGBT people but a look at the numbers debunked that. And the government Hungary tried to outlaw Prides. What We Do In The Shadows returned for another season

April

The first of several Pride events to have to reckon with a new tougher financial landscape in 2025 was Plymouth soon followed by Hereford and Worthing. A report called out rates of sexual assault in LGBT venues. In America the next step in making a more unpleasant country was closing a national LGBT helpline. while the UK’s rates of suicide and self harm among bisexual, lesbian and gay people were shown to be more than double that of their straight counterparts.

On TV, there was a new season of comedian comedy Hacks, while pan comedian Joe Lycett went on a tour of the Birminghams of America. The Last Of Us gave us bisexual apocalypse joy, and Another Simple Favour gave us a contortedly glamorous bisexual gangland romance.

Bi Camp in the Midlands

May

The Midlands welcomed outdoorsy bis to BiCamp and London got a new regular bi club night. IDAHOBIT took as its theme “The Power Of Communities”. In English local elections, LGBT-bashing Reform politicians swept to power in ten of the twentythree councils up for grabs. Despite this many major Prides decided to distance themselves from ally politicians as well as those hostile.

Abroad, New Zealand joined the list of countries with more bi than gay or lesbian people. The annual ‘
