The right response to our child when dealing with love, limits, and pressure. This is a Seminary-style example that pertains to so many areas in life.

I once got a call from a mother, Chavy, who was completely overwhelmed.

Her daughter, Bracha, was getting ready to go to seminary. What should have been an exciting and meaningful stage in her life had become a source of tremendous pressure.

Because suddenly, there was a whole list.

Not the official seminary list. The unofficial one.

Girls were talking about what they were bringing. The newest luggage. The nicest linen. The perfect wardrobe. The latest shoes. The makeup. The bags. The accessories. The extras. The “you have to have this” items.

It was as if going to seminary meant bringing your whole house with you. And every day, Bracha came home with something else.

“Everyone is bringing this.”

“Everyone has that.”

“I’m going to look nebby if I don’t have it.”

“Ma, you don’t understand. This is what girls bring.”

Chavy felt completely torn.

On one hand, she wanted her daughter to feel confident. She wanted her to start seminary feeling good about herself. She did not want Bracha to walk in feeling like she was missing things everyone else had.

But on the other hand, the costs were becoming enormous.

It was not one item. It was item after item after item. Each one sounded important. Each one came with emotion. Each one came with the message: If you don’t give me this, I’ll be different. I’ll be embarrassed. I’ll be less.

Chavy was not trying to deprive her. She was not against buying her nice things. She was happy to prepare her properly for seminary.

But she also felt that something had gone too far.

She told me, “I feel like I’m not sending her to seminary. I feel like I’m outfitting an entire apartment. And every time I say no to one thing, she acts like I’m ruining her whole experience.”

And that was exactly the struggle. Because the issue was not really the linen, or the luggage, or the clothing, or the accessories.

It was the pressure. It was the comparison. It was the fear of being the girl who didn’t have what everyone else had.

First, Feel the Pain

The first step was not for Chavy to say, “This is ridiculous.”

It was not to say, “When I went to seminary, we managed with much less.” It was not to say, “You girls are so spoiled today.”

And it was not even to say, “Not everyone is bringing that.”

The first step was for Chavy to understand what Bracha was feeling.

Because to an adult, it may have looked excessive. And maybe it was excessive. But to Bracha, it felt very real.

She was imagining herself arriving in seminary and noticing what everyone else had. She was imagining girls opening suitcases, setting up their rooms, comparing clothing, comparing things, comparing standards.

And she was scared of feeling less.

So, Chavy said something like:

“Bracha, I hear that this feels very stressful. I understand that you want to feel prepared and normal when you go. I understand that when you hear what other girls are bringing, it makes you nervous that you won’t have enough.”

That did not mean Chavy was agreeing to buy everything.

It meant she was acknowledging the pressure.

And that matters.

Because before a child can accept a limit, they often need to feel that their parent understands why the limit hurts.

Then, Hold the Limit

After validating Bracha, Chavy still held the boundary.

She said: “I love you, and we are going to make sure you have what you need for seminary. But we are not buying every extra thing that girls are talking about. We are going to make thoughtful choices, and this is the budget we are comfortable with.”

Bracha was not thrilled.

Actually, she was very upset.

She argued. She cried. She said her mother did not understand. She said all the other girls were bringing more. She said she would be embarrassed. She said, “Why do you always have to be different?”

And Chavy had to tolerate that.

That is one of the hardest parts of parenting.

Sometimes our children are upset because we are doing something wrong. But sometimes they are upset because we are doing something right, and they simply do not like the limit.

A child’s disappointment does not always mean the parent made the wrong decision.

Love Without Excess

Chavy did not become cold or harsh.

She did not say, “Fine, then bring nothing.”

She did not shame Bracha for caring.

She did not mock the pressure.

She helped her pack. She bought her beautiful basics. She made sure she had what she truly needed. She gave warmth, attention, and love.

But she did not allow the seminary shopping list to become endless.
