Puerto Vallarta takes on a different character from July through October, when afternoon rains refresh the jungle, strengthen waterfalls, and bring cooler temperatures to the coast. With fewer visitors, this season also offers travelers the chance to explore nature and local traditions at a more relaxed pace.

For experienced visitors, the rainy season is an ideal time to discover some of Puerto Vallarta’s outdoor experiences. From jungle waterfalls and marine adventures to gardens in full bloom and sea turtle releases, these activities offer a memorable look at the destination beyond its beaches.

Chase Waterfalls in Yelapa and Quimixto

Rainfall transforms the waterfalls south of Puerto Vallarta, making summer an excellent time to explore the trails around Yelapa and Quimixto.

In Yelapa, the waterfall known as Cola de Caballo, or Horsetail, becomes especially impressive after seasonal rains. The hike to the High Waterfall takes about 45 minutes from the town center and includes jungle trails and river crossings. Visitors should start early, wear shoes with good traction, and carry a waterproof bag for phones and other belongings.

Quimixto offers a gentler alternative, with a relatively flat trail leading to a waterfall and natural pools. Travelers can also explore the La Puerta River on horseback, making the experience accessible to families and visitors seeking a more leisurely adventure.

Discover Jalisco’s Raicilla Tradition

The rainy season is also a good opportunity to explore Puerto Vallarta’s connection to raicilla, an artisanal agave spirit with deep roots in the coastal and mountain communities of Jalisco.

At El Tasting Room in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood near Camarones Beach, visitors can learn about raicilla alongside other Mexican spirits, including tequila, mezcal, and sotol. Guided tastings introduce guests to the history, production methods, and distinctive flavors of these traditional alcoholic beverages.

Raicilla has been part of Jalisco’s cultural heritage since the late 19th century and received its Denomination of Origin in 2019, further recognizing its regional importance.

Snorkel and Dive at Los Arcos

Los Arcos de Mismaloya is another standout during the summer months. Protected as a marine park since 1984, the iconic granite formations shelter underwater caves, tunnels, and arches inhabited by a variety of marine life.

Snorkelers and divers may encounter angelfish, octopuses, moray eels, and sea turtles. From May through September, warm Pacific waters can provide favorable conditions for exploring the area.

The lower number of visitors during the green season can also mean smaller groups and a more relaxed experience on the water.

See the Botanical Gardens in Full Bloom

August and September bring abundant growth to the Vallarta Botanical Garden, where seasonal rainfall helps create ideal conditions for tropical plants.

After a rain shower, the gardens take on a fresh appearance, with water droplets covering orchids and other flowers while moss and foliage become especially lush. The scent of wet earth and tropical plants adds another sensory element to a walk beneath palms, ferns, and dense forest.

Visitors can complete their outing with a Mexican meal at Hacienda de Oro, the garden’s on-site restaurant. Because trails may become slippery after rain, sturdy closed-toe shoes and quick-drying clothing are recommended.

Witness a Sea Turtle Release

From July through December, sea turtles return to Banderas Bay to nest, with activity reaching its peak between August and November. Olive Ridley, Green, and Hawksbill turtles are among the species that come ashore during the season.

Local conservation efforts give visitors an opportunity to witness the next generation of these marine animals make its way to the Pacific. Resorts such as Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa participate in conservation programs that help release tens of thousands of hatchlings each year.

Releases are generally held shortly before sunset, when conditions are safer for the young turtles. Events typically begin with information about the nesting season and conservation efforts before the hatchlings are guided toward the water.
