The First Steps

Lai’s journey began to gain momentum in 2021–2022, when he started competing regularly in both junior and senior events. By the end of 2022, he had climbed to World No. 160, showing early signs of the potential that would soon make him one of Canada’s brightest stars.

The following years brought valuable experience on the international circuit. In 2023, he finished the season ranked No. 106 in the world, while 2024 served as a transition year that prepared him for bigger opportunities ahead.

The Breakthrough

The turning point arrived in 2025. At the BWF World Championships, Lai delivered the best result of his career by winning a historic bronze medal, becoming one of the few Pan American men’s singles players to reach the podium at badminton’s most prestigious individual event.

That success was followed by titles at the YONEX Canadian International Challenge and the XXVIII YONEX Pan Am Individual Championships. By the end of the season, he had surged from World No. 104 to World No. 22, firmly establishing himself among the sport’s elite.

Continental Dominance

Lai successfully defended his title at the XXIX YONEX Pan Am Individual Championships, becoming back-to-back Pan American champion and strengthening his position as the region’s leading men’s singles player.

“I think just my desire to keep improving as a player, and push for even better results!” Lai explained when asked about the motivation behind his continued success.

The Indonesia Open Milestone

The defining moment of his career came at the Indonesia Open.

Against one of the strongest fields of the year, Lai produced a series of outstanding performances to capture the biggest international title of his career. Throughout the tournament, he demonstrated the composure that has become one of his trademarks.

“I think just trying to stay focused and not get distracted too much. I try not to get rattled by the fans and applause,” he said after lifting the trophy.

The victory propelled him into the BWF World Ranking Top 10 for the first time, reaching World No. 9 and marking another historic milestone for Canadian badminton.
