Meet Habanero. He’s a rescued loggerhead sea turtle who underwent a life-saving amputation procedure and has now reached a milestone that once seemed all but guaranteed. After nearly two years of treatment, veterinarians have officially declared him free of infection.

The adult male turtle lost his front-left flipper in December 2025, following a dangerous bone infection that resisted treatment and began spreading. Now swimming with three flippers, Habanero is getting stronger as his caretakers work toward a hopeful return to the ocean.

In an Oct. 15 update, South Africa’s Two Oceans Aquarium announced that Habanero had entered the final stage of rehabilitation at its Turtle Conservation Centre in Cape Town.

The news marks an extraordinary turnaround for a turtle who was initially rescued in such poor condition that staff feared he might not survive.

Habanero’s trials reach back to Feb. 8, 2025, when a member of the public spotted him stranded on a beach in Witsand, South Africa.

According to the aquarium‘s original rescue account, the turtle weighed approximately 165 pounds and was covered in hundreds of leeches and thousands of eggs. The parasites had caused severe anemia, leaving him extremely weak.

After staff painstakingly removed one leech after another, over and over, his condition improved. However, veterinarians discovered a serious bacterial infection in the bones of his left elbow.

Habanero underwent months of treatment. It failed to treat the infection, however, and it eventually spread to other limbs. Following consultations with turtle specialists around the globe, veterinarian Dr. Bernice van Huyssteen amputated Habanero’s damaged flipper on Dec. 3, 2025.

The operation succeeded, though even then the storm had not fully passed; doctors still had to treat lingering infections elsewhere in his body.

That uncertainty finally ended in September 2026, when a CT scan confirmed he had recovered.

“To everyone’s immense joy, the results meant we could officially declare him free of infection after nearly two years of rehabilitation,” van Huyssteen said.

Three-Flippered Turtle Begins Training for the Wild

Habanero has since returned to the aquarium’s I&J Ocean Exhibit, where staff is helping him build the swimming strength and agility he’ll need outside captivity.

His workouts take an unusual form. Several times a week, divers use a specially patterned paddle to guide him toward food, swimming away to encourage him to follow at greater speed.

They also offer food at different depths, giving the turtle opportunities to practice maneuvering with one fewer flipper. The method helps reinforce an association between food and a visual target, rather than associating a full belly with people offering an easy meal.

Fortunately, Habanero seems more than willing to participate.

“Since his return to the I&J Ocean Exhibit, Habanero’s been quite mischievous,” van Huyssteen said, adding that his behavior suggests he’s feeling much better.

His favorite reward is sustainably sourced Cape redfish, and the rehabilitation team reports that he can still move through the water surprisingly quickly.

No release date has been announced, and his caretakers must first determine whether he is definitively ready to survive independently. Thankfully, this turtle already has brighter days ahead; Habanero has traded months of intensive medical treatment for swimming exercises, with plenty of fish waiting at the finish.
