Ponca, 1918: The town was named by the Ponca Oklahoma Mining Company, which platted the town, once a booming mining area for lead and zinc. The community is known today for the Buffalo Outdoor Center near the upper Buffalo River. The business district at the time was little more than L.G. Young’s general store with its large “STAR Tobacco” sign on the side.
