Why don't we see any more pop-up selfie cameras?

You can still find a few phones with pop-up selfie cameras, but don't hold out for this trend to make a comeback.

Phone manufacturers have waged a war on bezels over the last four years, and the result is that even budget phones these days have ultra-thin bezels on all sides. Thin bezels mean you get a larger screen-to-body ratio, allowing brands to cram a larger screen without increasing the dimensions of the phone. For some context, the Galaxy S9+ had a 6.2-inch panel, and the Galaxy S21 offers the same screen size even though it is 6.4mm shorter.

Xiaomi was the one to kick off this particular trend back in 2016 with the Mi Mix, which offered a 91.3% screen-to-body ratio. Xiaomi achieved this by changing the location of the front camera module to the bottom bezels, leading to an all-screen design. Brands have iterated on this formula; the Galaxy S8 and S9 series featured thin bezels at the top that hid the camera module, the ZenFone 5 and OnePlus 6 went the iPhone route and added a large notch up front, and Google killed this particular trend by overdoing it on the Pixel 3 XL.

Retractable camera modules offered the most elegant solution yet for an all-screen display.

Then came the smaller waterdrop cutout and the eventual shift to the hole-punch cutout that is now ubiquitous, but in between, we got one of the best implementations yet: pop-up selfie cameras. Vivo led the charge for this particular feature with the NEX back in 2018, and the phone showcased that it was possible to create an all-screen front without any cutouts.

OPPO wasn't far behind either, with the brand's Find X featuring a motorized module not just for the selfie camera, but also for the rear camera modules. These retractable modules gained momentum all through 2019, and we got a lot of interesting phones as a result: Xiaomi's Mi Mix 3 was a particular standout as you had to pull down the screen to reveal the front cameras.

The Reno 10x Zoom Edition had a shark fin-styled wedge module, ASUS' ZenFone 6 had a retractable motor that would flip over to the front so you could take selfies with the rear camera, and Xiaomi took the feature mainstream with the Redmi K20 series — which launched globally as the Mi 9T and 9T Pro. Even OnePlus joined in on the action with the OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro.

But just as this trend emerged, it seemed to fade away. The best Android phones in 2021 all come with a hole-punch cutout, and although the ZenFone 7 Pro has a pop-up camera with three sensors, the phone is limited to select markets. Vivo does the same on its NEX series, with the NEX 3 and 3S offering pop-up selfie cameras with dual cameras, but like ASUS, these phones are very limited in availability.

So why don't we see more phones with pop-up selfie cameras? The primary reason is likely weight. These modules feature a lot of intricate parts and require a motor to work, and all of that adds weight and thickness to a phone. I reached out to Xiaomi to test my hypothesis, and sure enough, the brand confirmed that size was a deciding factor in the feature's omission:

Retractable camera modules are usually much bigger in size. Thus, the final design on smartphones is slightly thicker when retractable camera modules are used as compared to other camera approaches.

Going forward, phones are expected to get thinner and more ergonomic which means retractable camera modules won't make for an ideal choice for smartphone cameras.

Xiaomi's reasoning bears out when you look at the Mi 9T next to the Mi 10T. The latter is 26g heavier, but that's because it has a larger 5000mAh battery, with the Mi 9T featuring a 4000mAh unit. There's also the fact that retractable modules cannot be protected from water ingress, so phones with these modules do not offer water resistance.

That said, there are reasons to be excited if you're interested in all-screen designs. Under-screen cameras are starting to make their way into phones, and these negate the need for a retractable module while still offering an all-screen front that isn't marred by any cutouts. The ZTE Axon 5G is the first phone to feature this tech, and while the module itself isn't great, brands like OPPO and Xiaomi are working to fine-tune under-screen cameras.

Xiaomi has already introduced the third-gen variation of its under-display camera technology, and the module will make its way into a phone sometime this year. Under-display tech is the eventual successor to pop-up selfie cameras, but it could be a few years before this particular implementation is anywhere as good as the standard selfie cameras on phones today. And if you want a phone with a pop-up selfie camera today, the best option continues to be the ZenFone 7 series.

Google's Jetpack Compose is a new concept in designing how an app looks and works, and it's pretty cool!

Google's developer team loves to make tools to use with Android Studio and show off how they work. The development of Kotlin and Android Jetpack libraries has changed the way a lot of developers who write the non-Google apps we love work. But its newest tool might be one of the best yet, specifically when it comes to apps for "big screens".

A big screen can mean a lot of things, but in this case, we're talking about tablets and Chromebooks. It's no secret that even the best Android tablets or the best Chromebooks all suffer from one of Android's biggest flaws: plenty of apps look really bad or just don't work as they should once you move past a phone screen.

A big part of the reason for that is that Android apps are usually resizable to infinity — really, you can sideload apps onto a huge television with the right Android TV box, and most work. They just look very ugly, and oftentimes the controls either aren't available or aren't where they should be. You would think that this would be a good thing, but it means that apps developed on a phone really only work well on phones. The extra real estate offered by a tablet or a Chromebook or even a foldable like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is wasted space.

Many Android apps can resize and work, just not very well.

Jetpack Compose, Android Developers' latest tool, just might be able to fix that. Jetpack libraries are like plugins for Android Studio that provide a quick and easier way to do mundane, repetitive tasks that have to be done if you want to build an Android app. They allow you to incorporate new code into existing APIs, as well as provide new APIs that a developer can use without writing a ton of code from scratch. But Jetpack Compose is a little bit different.

Jetpack Compose was designed to do only one thing — make building an app's interface a lot easier.

Nerdy things aside, Jetpack Compose is pretty simple to explain: it makes building great-looking apps for every Android device easier and simpler. It's a design tool used to lay out the look and feel of an app that is still extendable to any screen size. It's a completely new framework and way of building the interface of an app.

Instead of writing a ton of code to design your app for phones, more code for when users rotate or unfold their phone, and even more heaps of code for apps on larger screens, Compose writes and incorporates that code for developers. It's fully interoperable with all existing Android code, so updating an app to use it won't be a lot of extra work.

How it works is the coolest part. Karen Ng, director of product management at Google describes it like this:

With a fully declarative approach, you just describe your UI, and Compose takes care of the rest. As an app's state changes, the UI automatically updates making it a lot simpler to build the new UI quickly. From the demo we've seen so far from developers like Lyft, it looks like Compose lives up to the promises. Alex Lockwood, an Android developer for Lyft said it was easy and fun. How often does a developer say redesigning an app is fun?

I think most of us are really excited when we are given something that makes our job easier. That's what Jetpack Compose does for Android app developers. It's the kind of automation that can help fill the app gap on Chromebooks using Android as well as make apps more fluid and responsive on tablets — something Google hasn't been thinking about for a long time. And near the very end of the Compose live stream, Google VP of engineering Dav Burke said foldables are a focus for 2021 and that he thinks about Android on tablets and Chromebooks "a lot".

As good as the Pixel 4a continues to be, though, it's time to start looking ahead to what's next — specifically, the Google Pixel 5a. Whether you're interested in the latest spec rumors, want to see design leaks, or anything else, here's everything you need to know about Google's upcoming Pixel!

Google Pixel 5a Price

One of the biggest selling points of the Pixel 4a was its price, and with the Pixel 5a, we expect Google to remain committed to making it as affordable as possible. The Pixel 3a debuted in 2019 with a $399 MSRP, and a year later, the 4a hit the scene with an even cheaper $349 price. With the Pixel 5a, Google has a couple of options.

On the one hand, Google could try lowering the price even more — possibly all the way down to $299. Another $50 price reduction would mean very few year-over-year upgrades over the Pixel 4a, but if Google is able to retain that core Pixel experience while making the 5a even more accessible, that could be huge for the company.

Another option is to remain at the $349 price point for another year while offering subtle improvements where possible. As you can see in the leaked renders throughout this article, it already looks like Google will offer two rear cameras on the Pixel 5a where the 4a only had one.

Sticking at $349 seems more likely, but at this point, it's just a matter of waiting and seeing until we hear something else.

Google Pixel 5a Availability

In addition to price, another big question surrounding the Pixel 5a is when we'll be able to buy it. The Pixel 3a was unveiled on May 7, 2019, at Google I/O, and following months of delays, the Pixel 4a was officially announced on August 3, 2020.

We first thought that the Pixel 5a would get back to the May release window, but given how there's still such little information about the device, it seems likely that'll get pushed back to June or July. Similar to the uncertainty around price, the Pixel 5a's release is anyone's best guess at this point.

Google Pixel 5a Design

Here's where things start to get interesting. We saw our first Pixel 5a renders on February 22, 2021 — and as you can see — it sure does look a lot like the Pixel 4a 5G. In fact, it looks pretty much identical.

Just like the 4a 5G, this Pixel 5a render features a 6.2-inch display with a hole-punch cutout, two rear cameras, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. We're also treated to the exact same camera design, what appears to be a plastic construction, and another boring black paint job.

Reusing the hardware of the Pixel 4a 5G would make it a lot less costly for Google to produce the Pixel 5a, and if that's what's happening here, a lower price may not be out of the question. It certainly would have been nice to have some visual difference between the 5a and its predecessor, but it doesn't look like that's happening this year.

Google Pixel 5a Specs

We've talked about the Pixel 5a's price, availability, and design — but what about its specs? While the rumor mill hasn't revealed a lot of info yet, there are some things we can look forward to and speculate about.

That render leak of the Pixel 5a also revealed a couple of small specs, suggesting that the phone will have a 6.2-inch OLED display with a Full HD+ resolution and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Outside of that, the rest is up to the imagination.

From our end, we think it's pretty likely that the Pixel 5a will feature something in the Snapdragon 700-series for its processor. The Snapdragon 750G would be a nice upgrade over the Pixel 4a's Snapdragon 730G chipset, and that would also allow for 5G connectivity.

We can also probably expect another year of 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, along with a 60Hz refresh rate for the display. It would be amazing to see Google step up to 90Hz for the Pixel 5a, but as of right now, nothing hints at that happening.

As for the camera situation, it'll more than likely be the exact same setup found on the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 — that means a 12.2MP primary camera and 16MP ultra-wide sensor.

Will there be a Pixel 5a XL?

While we haven't heard anything about a Pixel 5a XL, the rumored 6.2-inch screen size for the regular Pixel 5a means it'll be considerably larger than last year's model. The 5.8-inch display on the Pixel 4a made it a really compelling option for fans of smaller phones, so going up to 6.2-inches will be quite the difference.

Is the Pixel 5a going to have 5G support?

It's difficult to have a solid answer for this being so early on in the rumor cycle, but if we were to guess, we'd say 5G is a likely feature for the Pixel 5a. Both carriers support a wide range of phones on T-Mobile's network. Pretty much any unlocked GSM phone should work as well as some from other carriers. You can bring any of the best Android phones to either service without issue. Keep in mind that a phone with full support for the T-Mobile network will allow for a better signal in some areas. Ting has a little more support with access to the Sprint and Verizon Wireless networks as well.

You can check the IMEI of your specific phone on either carrier when you sign up to be sure.

Both carriers sell phones ranging from the newest high-end Samsung and Apple devices down to the budget category. If you are trying to get a flip phone in 2020, Ting is your only option here. Review: Caseology’s Nano Pop is the best slim but sturdy Galaxy S21 case

Bold color accents, great texture, and a nicely contoured camera cutout make the Nano Pop the one to beat.

While I adore researching the best cases for the Samsung Galaxy S21 — or whichever phone is hitting the market this week — I'm always a tad disappointed when I go look at the newest and fanciest ones a manufacturer offers and see that they're only for iPhone. I can't be too mad — when you're starting out a new series, iPhone is the safer bet and its owners are never shy to call out anything they don't like — but I am disappointed all the same.

Such was the case with the Caseology Nano Pop, which debuted for the iPhone 11 series in late 2019. It came back for the iPhone 12 with bolder colors, and I held out hope that it would soon make the jump to Android phones. That jump came with Samsung Galaxy 21, and it was worth the wait. I've long adored the Caseology Parallax Series for its fun colors and unique cubist design across the back, but the Nano Pop has more grip and more reinforcement around that shiny new camera module.

It's not quite as heavy-duty as the Parallax, but I'm okay with that because the extra grip means I shouldn't have to test what kind of drop it'll survive.

Caseology Nano Pop for Galaxy S21 What I love

Let's start with the design. Rather than a traditional hybrid case where a flexible TPU shell slips into a polycarbonate frame, a smaller plastic frame is embedded into the flexible Nano Pop case to ensure you have a nice tall lip around the camera and no light from the flash can bleed through a gap in the silicone. The camera module cutout also shares the same bold color as the case's interior lining, where thin air cushion grooves are etched in concentric, elongated ellipses.

I wish that color also bled through to the buttons, but at least the pop around the camera is bolder for the S21 than it is for more Nano Pop versions. The three color combinations here are quite fetching, but I wish we'd gotten that Apple Red/Caramel combo the iPhone 12 series did. Don't get me wrong, the Light Violet and Prune Charcoal are perfectly fine — except for that latter name, Caseology, what were you thinking?

The button covers might blend into the rest of the case's main color, but I still adore them because they have the perfect amount of give to them. They're not loose and clicky, they're not stiff and hard; the button covers here are exactly the flexible fit you want to see in a case. Yes, it's a small detail, but it's one you'll notice every time you adjust your volume, or take a screenshot, or turn off the screen.

The cutouts for the pinhole microphones and the speaker grill are nice and tight, so you'll be less likely to get lint or other debris caught inside. While the cutout for the USB-C port feels a tiny bit lopsided when you look at it, it does this to avoid a secondary cutout for the mic beside it, and it makes the port nicely wide for fatter adapters and cables.

Texture is another small detail that makes a big difference. While the Nano Pop lacks the same 3D texturing Caseology uses on the Parallax, there's a soft-touch coating on here that's pleasantly grippy, even when your hands are a bit sweaty after being outside in the Florida heat (85 in February, but hey, it beats snow). I still put my trusty phone grip on the S21 so it'd be easier to reach the top of the screen one-handed, but if you have bigger hands than mine, the Nano Pop is all the grip you need.

As I mentioned before, I'd've loved to see a few more color options here — especially for the Galaxy S21 Ultra case, which only has two colorways — but I can't really blame Caseology by playing it safe with fewer variations. At least they're both on the color wheel and not just basic black. And again, I really, really wish the accent color applied to more than the lining and the camera cutout; putting it on the buttons or around the USB cutout could take that pop of color to the next level.

It's early days, so I'm not 100% sure how this soft-touch texture on the Nano Pop will hold up after months of my skin oils eating away at it. In over a week, I've only needed to wipe it off once to avoid any grime buildup, so it should last a while, but I know it won't hold forever. Then again, no case looks perfect after a year of slipping it in and out of my pocket.

Caseology Nano Pop for Galaxy S21 Competition

Being a hybrid case for the Samsung Galaxy S21, the Nano Pop has lots and lots of company in the space. It's better looking than the gunmetal grey Spigen Neo Hybrid, it's easier to get on and off than the OtterBox Commuter Series — the OtterBox Symmetry series would be a better competitor if it weren't more than twice the price — and the Speck Presidio2 Grip is also double the price.

In fact, the biggest competition the Nano Pop faces right now from name-brand cases is from Caseology itself. The Caseology Parallax is still one of my favorite case series of all time, even if the plastic half of the bumper can be more slippery than the Nano Pop's silicone sides. The Parallax is the same price and the more classic hybrid construction, but so far, the Nano Pop has won me over with fit, feel, and its bold color combos.

If you're looking for a case that won't sacrifice pocketability for protection, the Nano Pop is the Goldilocks case between dainty ultra-thin cases and bulky heavy duty Galaxy S21 cases. The Linksys MX10 Velop is just the name given to the two-pack of Linksys MX5 Velop routers. These routers are capable of delivering AX7800 speeds across three Wi-Fi bands. While these speeds are quite high, your modem's wired connection will max out at 1Gbps, and other wired devices will be limited to the same speed. While this is more than enough for the vast majority of people, it would've been nice to see more wired capability.

If you already have a Velop system, there's no need to get rid of it thanks to compatibility with the entire Velop family of routers. The most powerful routers in this case, the Wi-Fi 6 Velops, should be connected directly to the modem — with the older routers providing extra coverage in areas that don't need as much speed. The two units included in the MX10 package can deliver up to 6,000 square feet of coverage. If you like the Velop design, you can get a more affordable Velop AX4200 which is still plenty of speed for most.

Four Ethernet ports and a USB 3.0 port on each unit allow for a lot of expansion. The Wi-Fi 6 Velops are quite a bit larger than the Velop dual-band or tri-band AC mesh routers. Compared to a traditional router, however, the internal antennas help keep the appearance understated.

Velop also can be controlled with Alexa allowing for simple access controls for guests or connected devices. Parental controls are also included in the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi app. You can create profiles for different devices to reduce distractions during homework or after a certain time.

While you do give up some speed compared to the larger and more expensive mesh systems, the AX1800 speeds of the Netgear Nighthawk MK62 should be more than enough for most homes. These speeds break down to 1200Mbps on the 5GHz band with 600Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. 4K streams should be a breeze, and if you need a few more wired connections, a network switch could be connected to one of the gigabit LAN ports available on each router.

Netgear claims these routers can cover a 3,000-square-foot home, and of course, more satellite units could be added down the line. This is helped by compatibility with Wi-Fi Certified EashMesh. EasyMesh is a Wi-Fi standard developed to help ensure future compatibility with mesh products. This is all brought together with Netgear's robust Nighthawk app.

The Nighthawk Mesh WiFi 6 System from Netgear takes on compact AC-only mesh systems with its compact housing and understated design. Measuring only 4.8 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall, each router has a smaller footprint than a CD case. This compact design makes this mesh system one of the easiest to integrate into a home.

Netgear's Nighthawk app is used for management and setup, making it easy to monitor your network usage and add satellites. You can even manage your network remotely if you find you need to add or remove internet connectivity from devices even when you're away from home. The newest addition to Netgear's Wi-Fi 6 enabled Orbi family is the RBK752 system, which includes one base router and a satellite and can cover approximately 5,000 square feet with its tri-band, six-antenna setup. This Orbi is in line with the older Orbis as far as size and appearance with a two-tone gray and matte white housing. Wi-Fi 6 speeds come in at AX4200, which breaks down to 600Mbps on the 2.4GHz channel and 1200 Mbps on the 5GHz band. The remaining 5GHz channel can operate up to 2,400Mbps. However, it's dedicated to the connection between the Orbi units. This speed should be more than enough for the vast majority of home network use, including multiple 4K video streams.

The base unit has one uplink gigabit Ethernet port and three Ethernet ports for wired devices. You can also combine the uplink with one of the other Ethernet ports for link aggregation, allowing for a faster uplink to your router. The satellite has two Ethernet ports to connect more wired devices. This makes it a good fit for a home office or media center that needs a wired connection.

Netgear Orbi RBK752 is controlled by the robust Orbi app that allows you to control each device individually. The Android version of the app lets you test and record your connection throughout your home to determine the best place for your satellites for top speed. A traffic meter is included so you can keep an eye on your usage if you have a data cap. An optional Netgear Armor subscription adds in great security features for your network with enhanced parental controls.

Asus was one of the first networking companies to commit to mesh networking with its robust AiMesh software that can work on most of its routers regardless of whether or not they were explicitly designed for a mesh. Asus has repeatedly proven its abilities with the ZenWiFi XT8, which features a sleek and reasonably compact design with great capabilities. The routers come in white or charcoal colors and have three available ethernet ports on the back of each.

The ZenWiFi XT8 is capable of wireless speeds up to AX6600 with a tri-band setup. That is 574Mbps at 2.4GHz as well as 1201Mbps and 4804Mbps on its two 5GHz bands. While most connections today max out at 1Gbps, the ZenWifi is ready for the future with a 2.5Gbps input for faster internet speeds or, more realistically, a fast wired home network.

If you are looking to expand your mesh, you'll need an Asus router that supports AiMesh and will be best served by a tri-band Wi-Fi 6 capable router. The ZenWiFi XT8 can cover up to 5,500 square feet, so most homes should be covered. Still, it's nice that you can use an older Asus router as an expansion in low-priority areas.

More people than ever are upgrading to gigabit internet and getting a mesh system fast enough to support it usually means you'll have to find space for a fairly large node in several rooms of your house. Eero Pro 6 goes a long way to fix this with its tri-band AX4200 speed in a compact 2.1-inch tall and 5.3-inch wide housing. The speeds break down to 2,402 Mbps and 1,201 Mbps on either of the 5GHz bands with 574 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. With eight spatial streams, even high-end laptops should be able to make the most of the connection.

Each Eero Pro 6 node can cover up to 2,000 square feet, with the three-pack covering up to 6,000. Like all wireless routers, this can vary greatly if your home has a lot of interference like dense walls. Still, with three less powerful nodes, Eero's approach with the Pro 6 should allow for a lot of flexibility in the mesh setup. If you have any older Eeros, you can use them to expand your Eero Pro 6 mesh thanks to full compatibility with all Eero routers. Keep in mind that in areas where you connect to the slower Eeros, your speed will only be as fast as those older Eeros.

Software isn't the first thing most people think of when shopping for a router but Eero's app and consistent software updates have shown how convenient it can be to have a wealth of settings and network statistics at your fingertips. The UI is well-designed, and setup is a breeze, whether you're setting up for the first time or adding more nodes. Eero supports some nice features like IPv6, WPA3, and even port forwarding from the app.

Eero secure is a subscription software suite available on Eero systems. The base Eero Secure subscription comes with improved network security, parental controls with content filtering, ad blocking, and even VIP support. For a low monthly rate, this is a nice package to have especially if you have students on your network. Eero Secure+ adds antivirus software, a password manager, and a VPN subscription to that for a bit more.

The TP-Link Deco X20 is an excellent value for a Wi-Fi 6 mesh system, especially considering you get three nodes in the box to provide coverage up to 5,800 square feet. In a white cylindrical housing, measuring 4.33 inches in diameter and 4.49 inches tall, it should be easy to find space for these in any room. Inside there are four antennas and powering its AX1800 dual-band connection.

It's nice that each one also comes with two gigabit Ethernet ports on the back. This can help get some wired devices online, such as a PC in a home office. Gamers also benefit since consoles could be connected to the node via Ethernet, which can improve connection consistency.

All of this will be configured with TP-Link's app so that you will need a device running at least iOS 9.0 or Android 4.4. This shouldn't be a problem for most people, and the app will help you set the devices up in a strong configuration.

TP-Link Deco routers are compatible with Amazon Alexa and come with TP-Link's HomeCare software. HomeCare comes with antivirus security for your network as well as advanced parental controls. HomeCare also allows for great Quality of Service to keep speeds up even with heavy usage.

The Deco X20 has three nodes that cover up to 5,800 square feet at AX1800 speeds. Two Ethernet ports on each unit make expansion easy.

The best Wi-Fi 6 mesh router for gamers

Bottom line: Not everyone knows if they need a mesh system and TP-Link's Archer AX90 offers great standalone performance with the power and software needed to easily expand as a mesh. A fast 2.5G Ethernet port can be used as a WAN or LAN connection allowing great gaming performance on wired PCs and tri-band Wi-Fi 6 can keep wireless gaming fast.

Building a great router for gaming is a lot more than adding some RGB lights. With the Archer AX90 tri-band router, TP-Link set its sights on nailing the hardware and backing it up with a solid range of software that makes sense for most people. The Archer AX90 supports speeds up to AX6600 which breaks down to 4804Mbps plus 1201Mbps at 5GHz and 574Mbps at 2.4GHz. This allows for great speeds on connected devices with plenty of capacity for the mesh connection.

This router is positioned more as a standalone unit rather than a mesh system, but with support for TP-Link's OneMesh solution, it can serve as the base to a strong mesh system without many of the sacrifices of a more focused mesh system. OneMesh is now supported on several Wi-Fi 6 capable routers including the value-oriented Archer AX21 or the compact Wi-Fi extender RE505X. You could also use another AX90 to keep the benefits of a tri-band solution. If you're not sure if you need a mesh system, this router can be a great first step.

TP-Link has also included a fast 2.5G Ethernet port which can be used as LAN or WAN depending on your needs. This means that if you have an internet connection over 1Gbps, you can make the most of it. You can also choose to connect your gaming PC or NAS at full speed as many new systems are beginning to support multi-gig Ethernet. This superfast connection will give you all the speed headroom you need to game and stream from one PC. Console gamers also get great support for PS5's max link speeds on Wi-Fi 6 at 1201Mbps.

TP-Link's HomeCare software can help keep your network running smoothly thanks to an integrated QoS solution to help prioritize the most important traffic. It also has great access to parental controls so you can stay in charge of what your family views online. Finally, you can get reports to see how your network is being used to keep informed of all usage on your network.

Bottom line: The AmpliFi Alien is a fast router with a combined 7685Mbps of capacity. A color display on the front keeps you informed, and AmpliFi's excellent Teleport software makes working remotely as if you were on your home network simple and secure.

If you have cable internet, your ISP probably tried to get you to pay an additional monthly fee for a router that doesn't deliver great performance. Most people simply don't need much more than gigabit speeds on their home Wi-Fi networks. Many of the best wireless routers support Wi-Fi 6 and mesh if you're not sure you need either feature right now. Can you make your own mesh?

Something to keep in mind about mesh networks is that pretty much any router with a powerful enough CPU and enough RAM can technically act as a mesh router. Asus has taken this further than most other manufacturers by including its AiMesh in nearly all of its routers. It is technically possible to put together your own Wi-Fi 6 mesh with compatible routers, but the setup process will be more complicated than a complete mesh system.

This technology is more promising with Wi-Fi 6 routers thanks to the improved capacity and speeds over previous generations of routers. TP-Link and Linksys have also begun to include support in their standard routers for mesh expansion. This can be a great upgrade path for those that want to start with a traditional router and only upgrade as necessary.

How Google could improve Android apps for everyone, according to devs

Developers have a tough job and there are ways that Google could make it easier.

We just got our first very early peek at Android 12 and like every version that came before it, there will be new features. Some will be big features while some will be small, but as always, there will be one or two that each of us would really like to see added to our favorite app.

But for most of us, even on the best Android phones, it will become a waiting game. Some independent developers will be able to include support for Google's new stuff rather quickly and that's a testament to hard work combined with a bit of luck that made it a little easier to implement. But know that most developers that still maintain the best Android apps will be working hard to make the new stuff work without breaking all the existing stuff. That's what developer previews and beta testing are for.

But it's hard for a lot of apps to find ways to do this. There are some really good reasons and the biggest is that until Samsung delivers the update, the latest Android features really don't matter because Samsung, for all intents and purposes, is Android when it comes to consumer sales. If the vast majority of your users can't use a feature, there's no real rush to get it working. Even then, there are a couple of things Google could do to make the whole process easier.

The way to find out what a developer needs is to ask a developer.

I'm not an Android developer, so I rounded up the team and we reached out to people who are Android developers and asked them what Google could do to help everything be ready to go once a new version of Android arrives. For the most part, the same two answers came back over and over: better documentation with examples of how to get things working and better ways to test or even do some of the work directly from an Android device.

Documentation

If a big tech company like Facebook is building an Android app, they can get access directly to Google to get questions answered and might even be part of the process during feature development. This sounds really unfair to smaller development houses and independent developers, but the big guy gets more attention than the little guy because Android wouldn't be as attractive without the big apps.

Google does have a Developer Relations team to help anyone who wants to write an Android app, but it's not the same as traveling to Google's HQ and working with the team. That's why documentation is so important. The team at Smart Launcher told us how important documentation is.

I think case-specific documentation would drastically improve the time requested to implement new features. Google generally provides clear documentation when it comes to how to implement a feature in an app, but sometimes a feature is composed of more than one part, and not all the parts are equally documented.

Also, Google should probably require manufacturers to properly support new features or to publish some documentation if they apply any changes. The implementation of a new feature is much harder if we have to test the same features on every device.

This sentiment, especially the part about requiring a phone maker to document how it implements any new feature was echoed by several other smaller development teams and even some larger names like the team at Todoist who said that "nobody has time to test every feature on every single phone model." With thousands of different models, they're right.

Another thing Google could do surrounding documentation is to keep it updated. APIs change and evolve over time and the documentation needs to evolve with it. Google can sometimes be forgetful.

Online tools

The screenshot above is the online console for a registered Google Cloud developer. Everything needed to build an application based in Google's Cloud is there except the imagination part. You can browse and use Google APIs through a browser window, look for a pre-built solution for an existing function or feature, even set up storage access all from a Chrome tab.

There's plenty of documentation to get you started and you can even pay for a virtual machine to run your app in the cloud if it needs access to something like the Cloud Compute Engine. It's a full-featured integrated development solution to get most everything you need up and running quickly.

Compare that to the Play Store Developer Console. Keep in mind that most Android apps are run locally and not in the cloud, but still, there is a serious lack of features when compared to the cloud dev console. That's because Google also makes what's called Android Studio, which is a local IDE (integrated development environment) used to build Android apps. But the biggest difference is that one can be accessed from a mobile device and the other can't.

That's a pretty big deal to Nayelle (see her apps here) who develops home screen customization tools like live wallpapers and widgets. Nayelle would love to see a better dashboard and a way to store app templates in it so more work could be done from a phone.

The developers at Miniclip would also love to see better online tools that could bridge the gap between the Android developer's site and the Google Play Developer Console.

Android has a unique set of standard APIs for both native and hybrid apps and you'll also find specific APIs used through Google Play Services. Seeing a searchable database of documentation for it all in one place would save development time.

There's that documentation word again, but this time it's not the lack of it but the way it's exposed. It would seem to me that the Play Store dev console would be a perfect place to search through the relevant documentation, especially since you'll need to tell Google how you're using APIs before you publish an app in some instances.

The Android emulator isn't as good as the phone in your hands.

Finally, I can say this from experience during my brief foray as an Android app developer, a quick way to make minor changes to code and have Google refactor and rebuild an app in the cloud that you could download and test would mean you can better troubleshoot and hunt bugs. Android Studio is turning out to be a really nice IDE, but the emulator just isn't able to find bugs the same way you can on your own physical phone.

When Android 12 comes to your phone, most apps will still work just fine. But the devil is in the details and to keep supporting an app, a developer has to keep it updated for newer versions, which takes a good bit of work. Keep that in mind the next time you visit the Play Store!

It turns out that Google's "less is more" approach really fits well within the constraints of a less-expensive phone, and its strengths in software and camera processing stand out against less-refined competition.

It can easily be argued that its successor, the Pixel 4a, is the best cheap Android phone around, and an even more important device for building the Pixel brand than the pricier Pixel 5. And on the face of it, Google did things right with the 4a; it improved the specs, kept the same great camera, and dropped $50 off the A series price. That makes an enticing package — here's how it all works.

Google Pixel 4a Price & release date

The Pixel 4a was announced and made available for pre-order on August 3, 2020, then released just over two weeks later on August 20 for $349.99. Initially sold in a single configuration, the Pixel 4a features the Snapdragon 730G processor, 128GB of storage, and 6GB of RAM, and as of November 2020 it comes in two colors: Just Black, and the newer Barely Blue.

Though compatible with nearly any network, the Pixel 4a can be bought directly from Verizon, along with the unlocked model sold through most retailers. It's worth noting that while there's no official "Pixel 4a XL" variant, the Pixel 4a 5G features a larger display, a secondary ultra-wide camera, 5G network support, and slightly improved specs for $499.

Google Pixel 4a Hardware, display, features and specs

Google's well known for a minimalist design aesthetic even in its high-end phones, so it's no surprise that it keeps things very simple in the lower-end Pixel 4a. The plastic body is defined by its lack of flair or interesting touches. From front to back, top to bottom, it's all smooth lines and gentle curves — highlighted by a single pop of color from a contrasting power button. The rear-mounted fingerprint sensor is very shallow, to the point where it's barely distinguished from the rest of the back, which can make it a tad tough to use until proper muscle memory sets in — though I found even after two weeks that the swipe-down gesture was inconsistent compared to previous Pixels.

There's no formal "XL" version of the Pixel 4a, though the Pixel 4a 5G does have a larger 6.2-inch display, along with minor spec improvements and 5G support for an extra $150. The 5.8-inch screen size would lead you to believe it splits the difference between the 3a and 3a XL, but with a taller 19.5:9 aspect ratio display and dramatically smaller top and bottom bezels, the Pixel 4a is actually smaller than the Pixel 3a; it's shorter and lighter than the Pixel 4, too.

Google's hardware is simple and effective, and as far from flashy as you could imagine.

The small size is refreshing in a world where inexpensive phones have larger and larger screens to try and show greater value-for-money. After using the 4a for a week, my Pixel 4 XL feels like a surfboard. The 4a is easy to use one-handed, extremely light, and just bucks the trend of cumbersome and heavy modern phones. Whether that's actually a large enough market segment to attract a meaningful number of customers, though, is a major question. Between the small size and bland styling, Google doesn't offer a lot of curb appeal to potential buyers.

The AMOLED screen is solid for the money, with surprisingly high brightness and relatively good visibility out in the punishing sun of July in NYC. The 2340x1080 resolution is more than enough for this size, and off-axis color shift — a common issue on lower-end screens — isn't a problem. I do notice some subtle green/pink blotchiness at certain angles when viewing white or grey screens, but that's a minor complaint for a phone of this price.

The 4a gives you more screen, and better specs, in a smaller overall package than the 3a.

Moving to a "hole punch" selfie camera was a necessary evil for dramatically reducing the top bezel, and while I really wish it was on the right instead of the left (pushing over the time and notifications is just odd), it doesn't bother me much. I appreciate the better-balanced bezel size around the screen as a result, especially as it fits into the minimalist overall design.

The hardware rounds out really nicely in terms of features, with headphone jack on the top and stereo speaker separation between a down-firing grille at the bottom and the boosted earpiece at the top. The speakers won't blow you away, but are above-average for this price and are more than enough for watching videos or playing games.

Google Pixel 4a Software, performance and battery life

After spending the first half of the year using the Pixel 4 XL, Galaxy S20 Ultra and OnePlus 8 Pro, the Pixel 4a understandably underwhelms in terms of performance. But once you recalculate your expectations based on price, and get used to it after a few days, there's nothing to complain about here.

You don't get flagship-level performance, but the spec sheet is really good for a $350 phone.

In terms of the raw spec sheet, Google has done right by the budget-minded buyer. The Snapdragon 730 processor is more than capable of handling Android 11, and 6GB of RAM is good to see in a budget device. They combine for solid performance, even if it's clear that some heavier apps and multitasking are a beat slower than what you'd expect in a top-end phone. And it handled a couple long sessions of Call of Duty just fine — though this did result in a little wonkiness with my thumb covering the top part of the screen triggering random auto-brightness adjustments. I never experienced any hangs or unresponsiveness, just slight delays here and there; par for the course for this price. I also appreciate that the single Pixel 4a model has 128GB of storage, a surprising increase from the Pixel 4's base 64GB.

The only performance-related hurdle for me to get over was switching back to a 60Hz display, which makes the 4a feel slower than it is — even though I definitely became amenable to it after a week. Outside of the OnePlus Nord, we haven't come to expect higher refresh rate displays in this price range, but now that people are becoming accustomed to 90 or 120Hz screens, 60Hz definitely feels like a step back.

The software has nothing new or changed from what we see on the Pixel 4, 3a and 3 as of the Android 11 release, but we never expected the 4a to introduce any new features. That means you're getting a simple, easy-to-use and generally streamlined experience, with all of Google's headline features like advanced on-device Assistant functions, call screening, the Recorder app, live captions, the Personal Safety app, and little treats like "Now Playing" music identification. Google's take on Android is still one of my favorites (neck-and-neck with OnePlus), and it takes a nice balance of being appealing to nerds and casual users alike.

I wish Google could get this kind of battery life out of its high-end phones.

There is one big question about the software, though: what's going to happen with updates? The 4a launched with Android 10 in most markets, and was subsequently updated to Android 11 alongside other Pixel devices, which is a great start. But there's also the (distant) future to consider. Google guarantees "three years" of platform updates for Pixels, but it isn't clear how that will be handled considering the phone's launch was technically before the Android 11 release. The Pixel 4a could be put in a weird limbo of missing out on a final platform update by a couple of weeks; I suppose we'll find out in 2023.

We get to see the fruits of the processor and 60Hz display with battery life, which is surprisingly good. And not just because I'm getting a full day of use out of just a 3140mAh battery, but because I'm doing so with 30% left at the end of the day. In my usual use for a 15-16 hour day, with 3-4 hours of "screen on" time, using Ambient Display and the usual slate of utilities, browsing, messaging and social media, I was never wanting for more battery. Heavier tasks like streaming video or navigating in Google Maps never hit the battery hard, and I never once reached Battery Saver mode, which I had set to come on automatically at 15%. I can't even get this kind of consistent battery life out of a Pixel 4 XL.

On the charging end, Google's sticking with its same 18W USB-C PD charging, which absolutely gets the job done for this size of battery; although once again it's a tad behind the likes of the OnePlus Nord's 30W charging. That said, I'm completely happy to have a standardized and non-proprietary charging system, where I don't have to pay $40 for an extra fast charger. 18W PD chargers are plentiful and pocketable at a quarter of that price.

It's worth noting that while the 4a doesn't come with 5G, it does have broad unlocked support for every carrier in the U.S. Not only does it support Verizon, including its legacy CDMA bands, but it also has 24 LTE bands to fully meet the needs of T-Mobile and AT&T. There's also eSIM support alongside the regular SIM slot, just like the Pixel 4. Considering 5G hasn't reached ubiquity in the lower price ranges, it isn't a big loss — and anyone who has to have it can instead buy the Pixel 4a 5G.

The Pixel 4a effortlessly delivers high-quality photos every time you press the shutter.

Google has clear strengths in brand recognition and software ease-of-use, but the primary reason for the Pixel 4a's existence is to bring an amazing camera experience down to a much more affordable price. The 4a is using the same 12.2MP sensor as the Pixel 5, supported by OIS (optical image stabilization) and an f/1.7 lens. Just like with the Pixel 3a, this is a huge win: the Pixel 4 is still in the conversation as the best Android camera, even as it nears its first birthday.

The Pixel 4a's biggest camera advantage is being able to take amazing photos and do it consistently. It effortlessly delivers high-quality photos every time you press the shutter, which is a rarity at this price. Photos don't blow you away with over-saturated colors or tons of extra pop, but that's the point — you just get balanced, solid photos with high dynamic range. Every time.

It may have just one camera, but the 4a delivers top-tier photos no other budget phone can touch.

It's an incredible rarity to take a photo you wouldn't be happy to save and share, and even the ones that don't come out perfectly are a quick edit in Google Photos from being there. Using $1000+ phones every day, I take for granted having this level of photo quality in my pocket, but anytime I pick up a cheaper phone I'm reminded how weak low-end cameras are — the Pixel 4a is far closer to flagship than entry-level. That gap gets even wider when you see HDR+ engage in mixed lighting, or switch to Night Sight in dark scenes; no other phone within $300 can handle poor lighting this well.

The only time you're reminded of the 4a's lower price is when you take several HDR+ photos in short succession, when you sit and watch the processing progress bar notification. Waiting a couple of extra seconds is a bummer, but I've never lost a frame, and when the results are this good you're willing to wait sometimes. And it even has the horsepower to offer well-stabilized video in 1080p, or 4K30 video if you prefer.

The selfie camera lines up the exact same as the Pixel 3a — an 8MP f/2.0 with fixed focus — with the exact same results. Google's selfie photo processing is top-notch, producing consistently good shots, but I'm disappointed by the fixed focus paired with an 84-degree lens that can make it tough to capture your face sharply. Thankfully I have long arms, but more average-sized folks may find it tougher to get tack-sharp selfies, particularly of multiple people together.

An ultra-wide or 3X zoom camera would've been nice, but you can't argue with these results.

It's a valid complaint to say that Google's starting to fall behind, even in this affordable price range, by only having a single rear camera. While I appreciate Google's restraint to not throw three extra (read: bad) cameras on the back of the phone just to say it has a "quad camera" phone, I would have loved to see a secondary ultra-wide or 3X zoom camera.

Google's "Super Res Zoom" tech does an admirable job of sharpening zoomed photos, but it's really only good at 2X — anything further turns into a grainy and blotchy mess. And even those solid 2X photos are not as good as "real" zoom that comes from a dedicated longer focal length lens. Whiel I understand why Google didn't want to put an inferior secondary sensor in there just to say it has an ultra-wide camera, I'm glad that the Pixel 4a 5G rectifies this issue.

Google Pixel 4a Competition

The cheap Android phone space is packed with incredible products, and things get tightly subdivided in tiny increments everywhere from $250 to $400. In the U.S., the big player is the Samsung Galaxy A51, which launched at $400 but regularly retails for $300-325. This is the anti-Pixel 4a, with a huge display and shiny exterior, plus all of Samsung's usual over-the-top features. It's known for its inconsistent performance, but it has a great spec sheet and incredible battery life — and its camera holds up well against the competition, even if it isn't on the 4a's level.

Outside of the U.S., the OnePlus Nord is the obvious 4a competitor at €400. The Nord arguably bests the Pixel 4a in performance and software fluidity, and definitely stands out with its large 90Hz display — plus it has awesome battery life and faster charging. It also has 5G, if that's on your list of priorities. But much like the Galaxy A51, it's just a big phone, making it a competitor in price but not really in size. Its camera is a step behind the 4a's, but I can still see the Nord's overall package stealing a ton of sales from Google. The 4a wins in a few areas, but you just get more in the Nord for about €50 extra.

Google modernized and improved the design, stepped up the specs, kept the same great camera quality, slightly increased battery life, and dropped the price by $50 — that's a fantastic deal.

Google bucks the trend of cheap phones getting bigger and bigger displays, and I appreciate it — those looking for something larger can still get the Pixel 4a 5G. But even large phone fans should look past that size constraint and realize they're getting an incredible value for only $350 here. The camera experience speaks for itself, the spec sheet is going to carry the phone well for a couple years, and Google's software (and guaranteed updates) is always a strength. The Pixel 4a should be on the short list for anyone shopping for a budget-minded phone.

Half a year into the Pixel 4a's life cycle, it's still one of the best deals you can get on a snappy phone with a great camera. While phones like the Galaxy S21 have brought similarly aggressive pricing strategies to the high-end spectrum, few contenders have emerged in the sub-$500 space.

In spite of its modest specs, the Pixel 4a still runs Android 11 without much hesitation, and enthusiasts who don't mind running pre-release software can even try the Android 12 developer preview right now — though to be clear, this is not meant for consumer use just yet, and will be considerably less stable.

Google has expanded its lineup since the release of the Pixel 4a, subsequently launching the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G, but I still think the baseline 4a is a great fit for most people. While the 4a 5G offers a slightly faster processor, larger screen, and 5G support, the basics remain the same, from the frequency of software updates to the image processing of the camera and general build quality. It's still hard to call 5G a necessity for almost anyone in early 2021, and the Pixel 4a leaves little else to be desired compared to its larger sibling.

Even against the decidedly higher-end Pixel 5, which costs twice as much, the differences are surprisingly few in number. The Pixel 5 has a faster 90Hz refresh rate, along with a faster processor, an aluminum enclosure capable of water resistance and wireless charging, and an additional 0.6x ultra-wide camera. Still, nearly every other metric is comparable if not identical; just because you're paying half the price for the Pixel 4a, doesn't mean you're only getting half the experience.

We're already starting to hear rumors of the Pixel 5a, which will allegedly be larger in size and nearly match the design of the Pixel 4a 5G — though with so little to complain about on the 4a series, it's unlikely that the 4a owners will feel left out or cheated any time soon. This is still a phenomenal device at an unbeatably low price, and I doubt that'll change any time soon.

When will my area even get 5G?

If you have a phone that supports the newer nationwide 5G network and you live in a big city, there's a chance you're covered. This network now covers 230 million customers in 2,700 cities. Compared to 5G coverage from all carriers it's still lacking but it is growing quickly. This network shares spectrum with Verizon's LTE network with the tower allocating spectrum as needed based on demand. Check out Verizon's 5G coverage map to see if you're covered.

Verizon's DSS nationwide 5G is growing quickly but its speeds are still more in line with what you'd expect from LTE. Verizon wants to change that and has made huge investments in c-band spectrum. This 3.7GHz spectrum will allow Verizon to add more capacity and speed to its 5G network similar to how T-Mobile has deployed the 2.5GHz spectrum it got from Sprint.

In an auction that ended on February 24, 2021, Verizon spent an eye-watering $45.4 billion on 3,511 20MHz blocks of spectrum. While it will still take until the end of the year or longer to see any benefits, this new spectrum will allow Verizon's 5G network to keep pace with its competitors even in densely populated areas.

Ultra Wideband is fast but coverage is low

Verizon now has 61 cities with some level of UWB 5G coverage. This also includes coverage in 48 stadiums and arenas as well as seven airports. It makes a lot of sense to deploy UWB in stadiums and airports as these areas can be very crowded and even if they have Wi-Fi, it can be tragically slow. Even if you live in one of these cities, you can expect to be on LTE or nationwide 5G most of the time due to the relatively poor coverage capabilities of mmWave 5G networks like UWB. Its high frequency also results in poor building penetration meaning if there's a wall between you and a Verizon 5G node, you're probably going to be using LTE.

Ultra Wideband 5G expansion is going to be much more cumbersome than 4G deployment due to the sheer number of towers needed. Verizon's Ultra Wideband 5G deployment uses mmWave, or millimeter-wave, technology. While very fast and capable of handling many devices connected, each tower covers a much smaller area than previous cell technology.

What tech is Verizon using?

Verizon has launched a 5G network with both DSS and mmWave. DSS, or dynamic spectrum sharing, shares spectrum between the older LTE network and a sub-6 5G network as needed. This will help Verizon keep up with an increasing 5G load without disabling portions of its LTE network.

Ultra Wideband or UWB is how Verizon is branding its millimeter-wave (mmWave) 5G. This name refers to the vast amounts of spectrum Verizon has access to in the higher frequency bands of 5G. That's above 24Ghz. To put that in perspective, a wireless router in your home uses frequencies at 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. This spectrum can carry a huge amount of data but is much weaker at building penetration, needing a nearly unobstructed line of sight with the tower.

Which devices should I get to be 5G ready?

While you may be tempted to grab an unlocked 5G phone like the Galaxy S20, keep in mind that most of these phones will not be able to use Verizon's 5G network. It's unclear if unlocked phones will support Verizon's nationwide 5G network so your best bet is to get done directly from Verizon.

Luckily, Verizon's power has led companies like Samsung, LG, and OnePlus to make specific UW versions of phones that can access Verizon's UWB network. Still, as long as your device supports Verizon's 5G bands, you should be good to go.

If you're looking to get some work done, Verizon has a couple of hotspots that can access its network. The MiFi M2100 5G UW from Inseego supports both mmWave and sub-6 5G as well as Wi-Fi 6. With support for up to 30 connected devices, it can be a great way to get a lot of devices online in a pinch.

Which plan do I need for access?

All Verizon plans will have access to the nationwide 5G network for now extra cost. If you have a phone that supports the network, you will be able to access it without changing your plan or paying any extra. Still, opting for a 5G plan with plenty of premium data will help you get the most out of your 5G phone.

Currently, UWB is included with Verizon's Play More, Do More, and Get More Unlimited plans, which offer unlimited data on 5G, including unlimited hotspot usage. It also increases the streaming video resolution from 720p to 4K. If you have the Start Unlimited plan, you can add 5G for $10 per month.

Does it do home internet?

With approximate speeds of 300Mbps, using Verizon's 5G Home service may be the replacement for wired home internet we've been waiting for. As a $50 per month service with an existing Verizon Wireless plan and $70 without, this service is very competitive with most ISPs.

The coverage issues noted above are not an issue with this usage because a powerful and precisely placed receiver converts the 5G signal into traditional home internet with a stationary router. This router provides customers with all of the normal connections expected of a router such as Ethernet connections.

Is 5G worth it for most people?

If you have a fairly new phone with support for Verizon's full LTE Advanced network, then you probably won't get that much of a benefit from 5G just yet. Once Verizon has a sub-6 network in place and accessible, it will make a lot more sense. For many people, the jump to 5G isn't even available yet and may not be for quite some time.

As an enthusiast, I'm thrilled about the concept of 5G bringing fast connections to more people than has been possible with fiber-optic connections. Verizon being able to deliver fiber-optic levels of performance to a phone can help drive competition between ISPs as we have never seen.

The Galaxy S21 and Tab S7 receive several enhancements with March update

Samsung is releasing the March security update for the Galaxy S21, Galaxy A8, and Galaxy Tab S7.

Samsung has greatly improved the rate at which it pushes out updates, and it's proving that by rolling out the March security update in February. According to reports, several devices have been receiving the update in different regions, including the Samsung Galaxy S21, Galaxy Tab S7, and surprisingly the Galaxy A8.

According to SamMobile, users in Taiwan are seeing the March update reaching the Galaxy S21, which apparently comes with a few device enhancements like improvements to the camera. Some older devices are also getting the update, including the Galaxy Fold, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S10, and surprisingly the Galaxy A8. That last one was released in 2018 and wasn't initially involved in Samsung's plan to push four years of security updates, so it's interesting to see.

The Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ are probably getting the most out of the March security update (via SamMobile). In addition to the new Samsung Daily Free, the Galaxy Tab S7 tablets are receiving enhancements to the S Pen. Now the devices allow users to directly input text to the input field with S Pen handwriting. There are also improvements to Samsung DeX, which now includes Dolby support.

The updates are rolling out for these devices in various regions, so it may take some time before many people see them. Given Samsung's update cadence recently, it shouldn't be too long before more of the best Samsung phones and devices receive the March security patch, but expect a wider rollout in March.

Need a break during quarantine? Why not try Stardew Valley?

The new update makes the indie title more comforting than ever.

I have an enormous video game backlog. It's over 100 titles long, and I know that pales in comparison to some of the other backlogs I've seen. Going into quarantine, I thought I'd have plenty of time to make a dent. Instead, I've just been going through some old favorites and a few of the best PS5 games, like Alan Wake and Dead Space. However, lately I've been putting all of my time into Stardew Valley, a 2016 farming and life simulator (and one of the best simulation games out there) that is the definition of comforting. You spend your days bringing your dead grandfather's farm back to life with beautiful crops and happy livestock while forming relationships with the townsfolk and exploring the surrounding area.

It feels obvious that during this COVID-19 pandemic, I wanted to play something simple and soothing, rather than intense and stressful (although the other two games I mentioned above say otherwise). Luckily, Stardew Valley developer ConcernedApe released Update 1.5, which came out on PC late last year and just released on consoles, is huge. It not only reworks the endgame so you have more quests to do, but you also have another whole area to explore and more things to add to your farm. And if you wanted to restart the game, you could even have a Beach Farm, a long-awaited concept that was previously only available in mods. Essentially, every part of the game got new content. It not only works to bring older players back into the fold, it revitalizes the game, and it couldn't have come at a better time.

This new 1.5 update comes at a perfect time, and it brings so much new content as well.

There are other games that could've filled the comfort void during these uncertain times. The big one is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which has been nearly singlehandedly keeping the Nintendo company afloat throughout the past year. Other titles like Sakuna: Rice and Ruin, Calico, and The Sims 4 filled that comforting, repetitive void for me, but only for a short time. Every time I put down one of them I would sit back and think about Stardew Valley. Unfortunately, I fell off it some time ago after putting around 150 hours into it because I reached the limit of what I wanted to do. I had gotten married, had a kid, and turned my grandfather's farm into a success. What was next for me? What was next for Tina on Butt Farm?

I've been seeing a lot of conversations in my friend groups and on social media about what nearly a year in quarantine has done to us. People talk about wild dreams, trouble sleeping, or just not having the energy to be social when all you want to be is social. Time has lost all meaning, with days either running together or flying by. This isn't universal, but I've heard these stories so many times that it's starting to feel like it. Considering people in quarantine are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, or develop stress disorders, that there is a wide range of symptoms is unsurprising.

Stardew Valley doesn't make up for all the time we've lost this past year, but it does help time spent feel a bit more meaningful.

Stardew Valley isn't the cure-all for quarantine fatigue, but what it can do is temporarily ground the player into a state where time does have a bit of meaning, and small social exchanges can have rewards, even if they're fictional.

Stardew Valley works because it allows the player to set up various to-do lists and doesn't punish you for skipping a task or going at your own pace. You only have so many hours in the day, so you start prioritizing quests or searches for specific items — often without thinking about it. Do you have to water your crops today or do you have time to go into the mines? Can you manage both while also doing some fishing to get albacore for a quest? Sometimes, you have to remember certain events like birthdays and holidays, which means checking the calendar. Did you prepare enough crops for this season's festival? A day in Stardew isn't 24 hours long like in real life (it's actually around 14 minutes), but it's still a set amount of time and you have to plan. It helps also that a year is only four in-game months and not whatever it was in 2020.

Being able to ground yourself and be productive is one of the ways some psychologists have suggested dealing with the monotony of quarantine. Since we feel so out of control right now, being in control can "help restore your sense of agency and self-confidence," according to one therapist in Psychology Today. In Stardew Valley, the results aren't reflected in the real world but for a time, you can work towards something in-game. When you succeed, you're rewarded with money, the ability to expand your home, items, tools for your farm, and relationships. The ultimate Stardew fantasy is becoming the pillar of your community, and putting your nose down and getting to work is the only way to get there.

Of course, you have to build a boat to Ginger Island first.

This might feel repetitive after a while, and you might be correct. However, Stardew Valley added just enough new content in Update 1.5 to make it less of a grind. While the new Ginger Island is, in many ways, like other areas in the game with its own fauna, collectibles, and monsters, it adds even more purpose. You can build a resort, for example, or meet a mermaid. While you began the game just fixing up Pelican Town, you've slowly started expanding your reach. Ginger Island is practically its own new town to clean up and explore. The humdrum of Stardew Valley towards the endgame erased the sense of purpose it gave you, but this new update can keep you going for many long hours.

Stardew Valley is gentle on your mind, but the time you spend on it feels satisfying, which makes it perfect to wait out this never-ending quarantine.

Stardew Valley has always thrived because of its gentle nature and open-ended structure, but it's also been successful because it does a great job imbuing the player with a sense of purpose, even if it's temporary. The goals set up here would be huge undertakings in real life, but fixing up a farm and building relationships inside the game is doable. All you have to do is get through one day and then you can do it all again. Before you know it, a year has gone by and you've made progress thanks to some old-fashioned productivity and planning.

Getting through the pandemic is going to be much more difficult than just playing a game for a few hours every day. However, even a moment of control can break up the monotony of not being in control, just for a little while.

Google blew millions on game licenses for Stadia and sold miserably

New details show Google Stadia spent millions on games, didn't spend enough time cooking its own exclusives, and undershot its user targets by thousands.

It reportedly missed its targets in sales and users by "hundreds of thousands."

Two new reports, one from Wired and one from Bloomberg have shed new light on what the heck has happened to Google Stadia. Both Wired and Bloomberg reveal that, according to inside sources, Google put a lot of money into getting third-party games on the service, but never got the number of users it was counting on, leading to the closure of the company's two game studios.

Both reports are about the different ways Stadia was doomed from the planning stages. According to Bloomberg, the people developing Stadia were afraid they wouldn't be able to deliver all the promised features on time — and they were right. Bloomberg reports, "The library of games was small and mostly old, with none of Google's exclusives available yet. Most of the features Harrison promised were not actually there, such as the State Share concept."

To compensate, Google apparently poured "tens of million of dollars" into a campaign to get big-name releases onto Stadia. Developers were reportedly shocked at how much money Google was willing to spend to get the big AAA releases, which had already been out for months, onto its platform. They also brought in Jade Raymond, an industry vet, to build an in-house division to develop exclusives, but not soon enough to have any on the console at launch.

Wired's report cites inside sources who say the company didn't seem to realize how long video games take to make, and fired 150 of the developers before either of its two studios could make even one game. To quote the report: "Google wasn't funding games to sell games; it was funding games to sell Stadia," but Stadia's reception proved to be lukewarm.

Actually, "lukewarm" might be giving it too much credit. According to Bloomberg's report, Stadia "missed its targets for sales of controllers and monthly active users by hundreds of thousands."
