Building the Fibre-Optic Foundation with LANmark-OF

Every reliable fibre-optic network starts with a well-designed physical infrastructure. The cabling, connectivity and distribution components provide the foundation for transporting data between network locations throughout a building.

Our LANmark-OF fibre-optic portfolio provides a comprehensive range of optical infrastructure components, including fibre-optic cables, patch panels, adaptors, splice accessories, patch cords and pre-terminated fibre assemblies.

For building and network installations that require flexibility, our LANmark-OF Snap-In range provides a modular approach to fibre connectivity. Snap-In adaptors can be configured within the same patch panel, allowing different adaptor and fibre types to be accommodated according to the requirements of the installation.

The design also supports practical installation and fibre management. Dedicated configurations are available for LANmark-OF pre-terminated assemblies, with cable glands providing a secure method of fixing the assemblies within the panel.

This flexibility is particularly valuable in smart buildings, where network requirements can change over time. Offices may be reconfigured, additional devices may be introduced and new digital services may be deployed. Our modular fibre-optic infrastructure makes it easier to accommodate these changes without redesigning the entire network.

LANmark-OF Pre-Terminated Connectivity: Faster and More Controlled Installation

The installation environment is an important consideration when designing fibre-optic infrastructure for smart buildings.

Our pre-terminated fibre assemblies move part of the termination process away from the construction site and into a controlled manufacturing environment. This can help improve installation consistency while reducing the amount of field termination required.

Our LANmark-OF ENSPACE LC/LC Fibre Assemblies, for example, use Micro-Bundle technology and a dual-stage fan-out designed for installation within the ENSPACE panel and module. The cable construction combines a small diameter, small bend radius and reduced weight, helping to simplify cable routing and installation in space-constrained environments.

The same principle extends to our LANmark-OF MPO/MPO Fibre Assemblies, which are designed for use within the Plug&Play system. Their compact cable construction helps simplify installation, while the Plug&Play architecture supports different polarity configurations, including universal wiring, depending on the selected pre-terminated assembly and module.

The assemblies can be combined with MPO-LC modules for LC connectivity or with MPO adaptor modules for parallel-optics applications.

For smart building projects, our pre-terminated fibre connectivity provides a practical way to create a more controlled and repeatable installation process. Instead of relying entirely on field termination, installers can deploy engineered, factory-prepared assemblies that simplify routing and connection within distribution spaces.

This can be particularly valuable where installation time, available pathway space and project consistency are important considerations.

High-Density Fibre-Optic Distribution with LANmark-OF Plug&Play

As fibre networks grow, distribution points need to accommodate increasing numbers of connections without compromising accessibility or maintainability.

Our LANmark-OF Plug&Play architecture provides a modular approach to high-density fibre-optic distribution. The Plug&Play patch panel can accommodate up to four Plug&Play modules or adaptor plates in 1U, with configurations supporting up to 48 SC or 96 LC connections.

The panel's sliding and tilting design facilitates installation, upgrades and maintenance, while front labelling and patch-cord management help keep connections organised.

The system can also support different installation approaches, including pre-terminated LC connectivity and splicing, allowing the distribution architecture to be adapted to project requirements.

Flexible Fibre Adaptor Plates

The Plug&Play architecture provides flexibility at the connection level as well.

Our LANmark-OF Plug&Play SC/LC adaptor plates are available for multimode, singlemode and singlemode APC applications. Up to four adaptor plates can be installed within a 1U panel, providing a compact and modular method of managing fibre connections.

The adaptor plates can be used with SC/LC pre-terminated fibre assemblies or with cables terminated by splicing.

High-Density MPO Connectivity

For applications where fibre density and space efficiency are priorities, our Plug&Play MPO modules provide another option.

The modules are available in 12-LC and 24-LC configurations, with straight, crossed and universal wiring options available depending on the selected module. The modules are pre-installed and factory tested, and can be used with LANmark-OF ENSPACE male MPO-MPO Universal Pre-Term assemblies.

With up to four modules fitting within 1U, the architecture can provide up to 96 LC connections in a single rack unit.

For smart building networks, high density is only part of the equation. The ability to organise, access and expand fibre connections is equally important. Our modular distribution architecture allows network infrastructure to evolve as building requirements change, while maintaining a structured approach to installation and maintenance.

FTTO: Extending Fibre Beyond the Distribution Layer

Fibre does not have to stop at the building's main distribution point.

For buildings where fibre needs to extend closer to users and connected devices, our LANactive Fibre To The Office (FTTO) solutions provide an alternative to conventional horizontal copper cabling.

FTTO can be particularly useful in buildings where cable-tray capacity, riser space or telecommunications-room space is limited. By extending fibre deeper into the building and placing a compact active switch close to the work area, FTTO can reduce the amount of copper cabling required between the telecommunications room and connected devices.

This approach can also help overcome the distance limitations associated with structured copper cabling. Fibre can support significantly longer transmission distances, providing greater flexibility when designing networks across large floors, buildings or campuses.

Reducing Cabling Volume with FTTO

Traditional horizontal copper networks can require large bundles of cables running from telecommunications rooms to work areas. As the number of connected devices increases, these cable bundles can place additional demands on cable pathways, racks and distribution spaces.

Our LANactive FTTO approach reduces the need for these bulky horizontal copper bundles. FTTO can reduce cabling volume by up to three-quarters compared with traditional horizontal copper installations.

The smaller diameter of fibre cables can also help reduce the space required in cable pathways and racks.

Fibre provides another important advantage in environments where electromagnetic interference may be a concern. Unlike copper, optical fibre is immune to electromagnetic interference and does not require grounding for signal transmission.

LANactive GigaSwitch: Local Connectivity and PoE

The active component of an FTTO architecture is the switch located close to the work area.
Our LANactive GigaSwitch family provides compact FTTO switching with fibre uplink options and copper user ports. Depending on the model, PoE capabilities allow compatible devices to receive both network connectivity and power over the local copper connection.

Our higher-performance XGigaSwitch V6 portfolio extends this concept to 10G FTTO applications, with configurations providing up to three SFP+ fibre uplinks.

This creates a practical division of responsibilities within the network:

Fibre provides the high-bandwidth backbone and uplink, while the local FTTO switch provides copper connectivity and, where supported, PoE to connected devices.

The result is a flexible architecture that can bring network intelligence closer to users, wireless access points and other connected building systems without requiring large copper bundles to run throughout the building.
