I’ve been super busy over the last few weeks and haven’t managed to keep up with everything that I’ve been doing on the blog. So, I’m posting this presentation that I gave to the Nottingham Trent University Future of Work conference back in February.

In it I discuss the nature of career and some of the key challenges that students are facing in the contemporary era. The presentation was delivered to a group of current undergraduates.

Careers AI and the future – Hooley Download

During the session I had the opportunity to ask the students their perspectives using an online survey. So, I thought that I’d share these here as well as I found them thought provoking.

This question suggested that students are feeling more optimistic about their futures, than media presentations of young people’s attitudes might suggest.

In the session I offer them four types of career that they might expect to have. The overwhelming expectation was that they would be engaged in neoliberal hustling as part of their career rather than in more benign or supported forms of career. However, they were also not convinced that they were careering in a period of crisis.

When asked about their worries, they were most worried about finding the right job, there not being enough work and AI armageddon.

Very few students weren’t worrying about the future.

When asked about their immediate plans, they were divided as to whether they should be planning for their long term futures or not.
