I don’t remember any specific things I learned in Grade 6, but I remember my teacher reading aloud to us. I remember her glasses, her voice, and the sound of her footsteps as she walked up and down the rows with a book in her hand. I remember The Trumpet of the Swan, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Twenty-One Balloons, and A Wrinkle in Time.

There is something pretty special about starting the school year with a really great read-aloud. Gathering together around a book gives a class a shared experience right from the beginning — characters to talk about, problems to wonder about, funny moments to remember, and, if you’ve chosen the right book, that wonderful cry of, “Just ONE more chapter, PLEASE!”
