UPC case against Chinese automaker Geely makes Bardehle first firm to be on both sides of Avanci

Sun Patent Trust’s UPC action may dissuade automaker Geely from peacemeal resolution; Bardehle becomes first law firm to be on both sides of Avanci

Geely will ultimately need a license to all cellular SEPs, the vast majority of which are available through the Avanci pool as a one-stop shop option. And it will need a license to non-cellular Nokia patents (WiFi etc.).

SPT's infringement lawsuit targets the following Geely brands: Lynk, Zeekr, Lotus, and Smart (a 50/50 JV with Mercedes).

In Nokia v. Daimler, Bardehle Pagenberg represented intervening suppliers Bosch and TomTom. It also advised Volkswagen in connection with licensing negotiation groups. BMW never had a disput with an Avanci licensor, but Bardehle is BMW's go-to firm. Now Bardehle has something in common with Toyota, the first automaker to have become an Avanci licensor after first being a licensee: it knows both sides of the Avanci platform.
