Trump IP deal and correction to yesterday's email (Apple Watch ban)
1) Donald Trump Jr. owns 5% of patent monetizer Fintiv, his second patent investment to come to light this year (after SIM IP)
We were first to report on Mr. Trump’s investment in famous patent monetizer Erich Spangenberg’s SIM IP. It turns out he has invested in at least one other patent monetizer.
2) Correction to yesterday's email regarding the Apple Watch import ban
Yesterday you received our email about Apple's workaround for the five patent claims underlying a U.S. import ban on the Apple Watch. By the time you received the email, the article on our website already correctly explained the situation, but it was too late to revoke the older version that was on its way by email. Please accept our apologies for that.
As the web version of the article (as well as our related LinkedIn post) explained at the time, the situation is such:
- The table of the 5 claims from 2 patents and the relevant claim limitations was already correct in yesterday's email.
- The (quickly fixed) error was that moving the calculation of blood oxygen levels from the Apple Watch to the iPhone designs around 4 of the 5 claims, but not all 5.
- For the 5th claim (claim 12 of the '648 patent), which effectively also involves computation but doesn't explicitly claim it, the solution is that the results are displayed only in the Apple Health app for iOS, i.e., on the iPhone and not on the Watch.
