Nokia and Verifone have settled their standard-essential patent dispute that involves three patent assertions in the Munich I Regional Court and two in the Unified Patent Court.
Nothing significant had happened on the litigation front, suggesting that this was a case of an implementer who initially rejected Nokia's licensing terms but wasn't really prepared to stand its ground in court either.
A LinkedIn post by Nokia's head of IoT licensing, Patrik Hammarén. notes that all Western payment terminal makers are now licensed to Nokia's patents (a fact that would have upped the ante for Verifone's FRAND defense), but their Chinese counterparts are not. That is an interesting situation and reminiscent of the situation in automotive, where Nokia announced a deal with an unnamed Chinese automaker a few months ago.
