Dolby sues Snapchat over AV1, HEVC; Apple seeks UK FRAND help; Great Wall Motor, Skyworth sued in Brazil; Intel settles; EPO news

1) Free: Dolby sues Snap(chat) over AV1 and HEVC patent infringement in U.S. and Brazil: Access Advance VDP license would resolve issue

Internet platforms that stream videos are largely unlicensed. There is now more enforcement, and the latest major platform to be sued over alleged infringements is Snap, the operator of Snapchat.

2) Premium: Intel joins Google, Samsung in settling patent dispute with biometrics firm Proxense in Western District of Texas

Meanwhile, Proxense’s patent infringement suits against Apple, Microsoft, and LG are still pending.

3) Partly premium: Apple pushes back against Powermat’s Qi SEP assertions with FRAND actions in U.S. and UK, trying to undermine UPC and German jurisdiction

Apple responded to Powermat’s charger-related patent infringement lawsuit in the Western District of Texas with a FRAND contract lawsuit and is now additionally looking for help from the English courts.

4) Partly premium: China’s Great Wall Motor and Skyworth sued in Brazilian SEP actions; all patents available through pools; PI against Geely imminent

Avanci licensors are suing Chinese automakers Great Wall Motors and Geely while a Sisvel licensor is suing electronics conglomerate Skyworth. All of that in Brazil. The Skyworth case is likely the first-ever Brazilian patent suit involving the AV1 standard.

5) Free: Access Advance announces four new Video Distribution Pool licensors (among them, Sharp) and independent FRAND analysis of VDP rates

Sharp is a long-time leader in consumer electronics and arguably the most famous one of four new licensors of Access Advance’s Video Distribution Pool.

6) LinkedIn: EPO has good news for UPC as Unitary Patent uptake exceeds expectations

"Unitary protection was requested for 34 357 European patents granted in 2025, some 28.7% of all grants (up from 25.6% in 2024). In 2025, the overall uptake rate amongst Europeans stood at 40.0%, ahead of forecasts."

7) LinkedIn: China surpasses Japan in EPO patent filings

The EPO reported its 2025 application numbers. The following sentence describes a significant change from the previous year: "Applications from P.R. China rose by +9.7%, putting Japan (+1.1%) into [fourth] place for the first time."
